Signs And Symptoms

  • Causes : Usually Myopia occurs when the size of the eyeball grows longer causing the light rays to focus at a point in front of the Retina rather than on the Retina. Myopia begins during childhood and there is a higher risk of Myopic children of Myopic parents. In most cases Myopia stabilizes during childhood, however due to changes in lifestyle continues to progress beyond.
  • Treatment : It can be treated with eyeglasses, contact lenses, orthokeratology, or refractive surgery, or corrective lenses. Eyeglasses and contact lenses prescribed by an optometrist are the most common non-invasive treatments.
  • Orthokeratology : Is a process when specially designed rigid gas permeable lenses are worn mostly during night to re-shape the cornea to reduce Astigmatism and Myopia.
  • Surgery: Using Laser influenced procedure or LASIK (laser in situ keratomileusis) the irregularly shaped cornea is re-shaped.
What is myopia ?

Myopia is a common eye condition where objects which are far appear blurry and objects closer appear to be clear. It is also called as near sightedness or short sightedness and it’s one of the most common refractive conditions.

How To Slow It Down?

In Adults

  • Wearing correct prescription eyeglasses and contact lenses.
  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule, which means every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds and remember to blink.
  • Option of refractive surgery do exist.

In Youngsters/Teenagers

  • Wearing correct prescription eyeglasses.
  • Achieving the right balance of indoor and outdoor life.
  • Use of specific types of progressive lenses.
  • Medications (eye drops) for kids as part of Myopia control.
Can Myopia Be Cured ?

Eyeglasses like contact lenses, only correct Myopia or shortsightedness and help you see clearly. There is no scientific evidence to suggest that wearing eye glasses for a limited period actually alters, improves your eye sight or cures Myopia.

Myopia, is caused by the shape of the eye - either the eyeball is slightly too long or the cornea (the clear covering of the front of the eye) is more curved. Eyeglasses and contact lenses correct the refractive error but not the cause. Refractive surgery is one of the methods which can "improve" your vision permanently.
